MMI COUPLER DESIGN:

A mode injected from the left into a Multi Mode Interference coupler. In this example the output varies with the length of the middle section. Because of the EME modal method employed by FIMMPROP, once the eigenmodes are known for each section of the device, recalculating the output field after having varied the length of any section is an instantaneous operation.

This feature alone makes possible design operations which with other propagation methods, such as BPM, would require unrealistic lengths of time. So it was possible to obtain the optimal coupling length within seconds by doing a simple length scan of the middle section.
