What is FIMMPROP?

FIMMPROP is a highly innovative tool for simulating 2D and 3D propagation phenomena in waveguides based on the EME method (EigenMode Expansion), permitting one to analyse a variety of 3 dimensional waveguide structures in a rigorous and fully vectorial manner. The EME method enables the fields to be calculated using fast semi analytical methods. The speed and nature of the calculations allow the propagation to be treated in a fully bi-directional manner, taking into account all the reflections at intermediate joints. This makes FIMMPROP capable of modelling structures which are insolvable by other methods such as BPM. In particular, the use of modal analysis/EME means that once the modes of the waveguide are found then propagation along the length of the section is near-instantaneous. Furthermore, the flexible design paradigm makes it very easy to model complicated systems, which may include bends, couplers, periodic structures etc. This module can also model tilted joins, facets and free space regions, e.g. for waveguide-gap-fibre simulations.

The ease of use and the speed of the calculations make FIMMPROP the ideal tool for designing complicated structures such as MMI couplers, mode converters, codirectional couplers (e.g. polarization converters). The implicit nature of the algorithm makes it easy to model devices with strong internal reflections, such as waveguides terminated by a tilted facet. Moreover, the use of semi analytical modal methods by FIMMPROP permit calculations to achieve high accuracy even for more complicated structures.
